Lake Rotoiti is renown for its mature trout, often found in the deeper parts of the lake.

Lake Activities

Although experienced anglers will have their favourite spots around the lake for catching a healthy sized trout, if you are keen to indulge in trout fishing and don’t have your own boat, we recommend however that you charter a local boat with a skipper who knows the spots.  (details listed)

There are many parts of the lake you can drive to if you are fly fishing, which in most parts is open year round for shore based fishing.  Lake Rotoiti is closed for boat fishing from the 30th June to 1st October, and would recommend Lake Rotorua in the closed season. Boat charter is also available to take you to Maniparua Hot Springs only accessible by water. These are natural hot springs distributed to pools of varying temperature. This would have to be one of the nicest places on earth mid to late morning on a sunny winters day. It is common practice to jump in the lake afterwards (although not compulsory). We also recommend an evening trip.

The nature of the lake with its elongated shape, high ridges to either side and many bays and beaches mean that you can enjoy what it has to offer in both fine weather and not so fine. There are inlets to explore that unexpectedly open to a secluded backwater such as Te Arero Bay and Honey Moon Bay. The cliffs at the eastern end of the lake border the wide open part of the lake and provide good shelter for fishing, skiing, or just tying up to an overhanging branch and having a picnic. There are many ski lanes each with their own uniqueness, such as Hot Water beach just 5 minutes by speed boat, where as the name suggests you can get hot water by digging a hole in the sand. There are many bush walks around the lake, with Moose Lodge by Hauparu Bay providing a venue for breakfast, lunch or dinner and a round of golf in off peak times by arrangement with the management. Okawa Bay Lodge is accessible by both boat or 5 minute trip by car. It has a restaurant and heated pool for dining guests.
